MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN

(Photos by: Kent Lazarraga of the Orange Studio)

By some twist of fate, these frenemies got married. Maybe their union is a testament to the saying “the more you hate, the more you love.”  Well, looking at them now, you won’t even think that they once swore off each other’s company. Their faces and smiles are undeniably a picture of sheer happiness, love, and bliss.

Tina San and Andy Co met through a common friend in college. They got along well but didn't see each other in a romantic way. Everyday, they hung out with Andy's older sister, Amie, and their small group of friends.

Despite the good rapport, the two were always seen bantering and bickering at each other. After a few months, a serious argument finally caused Andy and Tina to drift apart. They never talked nor saw each other again.

Well, not until their paths crossed ten years after they fought. Time definitely heals all wounds. By then, they were already mature adults who easily set aside old grudges to rekindle their friendship. It was like going back to their college days, only now, instead bickering, they spent hours on the phone everyday gushing affection to one another.

They looked back and tried to figure out what went wrong before. Eventually, they realized that they really liked each other all along. Having realized how much they missed out from years they spent apart, they then decided not to waste any more time and just go and tie the knot. Luckily, both their parents approved of their engagement, despite it being short. Friends were shocked when they found out that the two actually became a couple, as their hatred of each other was general knowledge to everyone.

The dark clouds called on rains on their wedding day. Since they prepared for a garden wedding, they were both worried the rain will spoil the celebration. However, no amount of heavy downpour could kill their faith. Tina looked beautiful in the wedding gown designed by Rodel Macatangay. Her bridal glow reminded everyone of the classic China doll, radiating in youthful innocence. Tina and Andy remained positive and kept their hope that the skies will be in their favor. Minutes before the bride walked the aisle, the rain stopped. They were blessed with good weather all throughout the ceremony until after everyone left for their reception.

Tina, who loved everything romantic and vintage, chose pastels for her wedding theme. “I had great support and help from my coordinator and event stylist, Noel Tanza. I’m just really happy with how everything went. Maybe the rain will bring us good fortune all throughout our marriage.”

VICTOR / VICTORIA

(Fashion Editorial for Edge Davao newspaper)

Clothes and shoes: Forever 21

I am borrowing the title from the 1982 musical film of Julie Andrews, where she portrayed the role of a female soprano who found a career in being a male female impersonator.

Nowadays, it seems like boundaries no longer exist in terms of what men can do that women can’t. History, time and again, has told us of powerful women taking over the throne of kings. Truth be told, women throughout history have been playing the role of men - in movies, in art, and in everyday life.

In the world of fashion, more and more designers have crossed the thin line which defines menswear from female clothing.  The industry has relaxed its attitude to gender, and became more accepting of diversities. In a way, androgyny has ignited the imagination of many fashion designers and photographers, and some designers would even feature a male model as their “female muse.”

While it may seem that androgynous dressing is only a hype of today’s world, the mixing of gender clothing and roles has always been around for centuries. For one, Joan of Arc in the 15th century dressed as a man to gain access to Charles VII.

Over the years, women’s fashion has taken a masculine turn and evolved into a large-scale trend. Unisex clothes have blurred the masculine-feminine boundaries and became a refreshing style in different settings. The gender bender trend is easily made up of key pieces such as pinstriped and plaid suits, tuxedo jackets, trench coats, slouchy wide legged pants, cigarette pants, baggy knitwear, waistcoats /vests, crisp collared white shirts, leather jackets, Oxford / spectator shoes, and neckties.

Women nowadays can just shuffle through their boyfriend’s closet to search for an outfit for the day. Male clothes on women not only come as functional and practical, they also create a sexy and provocative look. The boyfriend’s shirt (which is basically a man’s polo) is now considered a wardrobe staple for women. In most cases, they try to retain the “lady-like” edge by choosing form-fitting pieces and matching them with a stylish purse or bag.

Androgyny has always been a source of interest and intrigue. While it touches on culture and diversities, there is always something empowering and liberating in suiting up. It projects a sense of independence. It validates that women are of the same level of power and strength as the other kind, enjoying the best of both worlds in a stylish kind of way. We think this is one trend that will be enjoyed by women for many more centuries to come.

ADVENTURE TIME WITH QUENTIN

Birthday parties are often larger and more extravagant when a person reaches what is regarded in a culture as a milestone age, also considered a transition from childhood to adulthood.

Next to the first birthday, the seventh is one of the biggest celebrations families prepare for. By the time children reach seven, they are old enough to choose and decide on what kind of birthday party they would want to have.

A huge chunk of time and effort are spent to produce a magical experience in a children's party. Imagination, creativity, and multi-tasking are key ingredients in pulling off a unique party theme for 7 year old kids, who, by such time, already have a certain level of expectation in terms of what’s entertaining and fun.

Mommy Bianca Barretto Uy knows exactly all that. She, together with her husband, Moe, was all ears and gave full support to what her eldest son, Quentin, wanted for his birthday.

“The theme has to be something he and his friends can relate to,” Bianca explained.
With the help of trusty event planner and stylist, Annie Lim, they conceptualized a fun-filled afternoon party dubbed as “Adventure Time with Quent” --- a spin off from a hit cartoon show on cable.

True to the cartoon’s setting and outline, Quent’s own party became an exciting adventure itself. Kids were treated to games and fun as they hopped around tables and joined in the activities. Annie even added simulations of the cartoon characters into the setup, which stirred up the kids’ excitement. The cake itself was a delightful sight, a 3D layered version of the main characters from the TV show.

Children and adult alike gamely joined the program. The room was an air of enjoyment and glee which pleased the brains behind the event, Bianca and Annie. On top of the colorful execution and cheerful farewells after the party, what was more rewarding to the family was Quent’s smile which reached from ear to ear--- a picture of content from a happy birthday boy.

TRENDS OF 2012

New Year is all about change. As we de-clutter ourwardrobe and open space for new pieces, let’s take a quick look on some of thefashion trends that shaped 2012.
Color-blocking
Bold, solid-color pieces made a quite a buzz amongfashionistas at the early part of the year. Guided by the “3-colors max” rule(so as to avoid the Rainbow Brite look), this balanced mix of traffic lightcolors and bold hues (citrus yellow, cool blue, and bright pink) streamlinedwardrobe staples and added glam to simple dressing by tossing a few colors overa dress or a simple top or bottom.

Sports Luxe

From London and back, the spirit of the 2012 Olympicstrickled down into our own wardrobe as sportswear made a strong presence in thesecond quarter. Who can ever forget the It Girls on the cover of preview, dressed in iconic pin up shorts and airy sleeveless top? This style trend alsohit fashion home run with tailored and polished versions of the baseballjacket, shoulder coats, waffle knit, and sweat pants.

Super Bold Prints

Vibrant, swirling, styled-head-to-toe patterns also made a bold statement. Thistrend shaped the face of power dressing and earned its right in the fashionscene, calling attention to the visually arresting designs of oversize florals,mirror-like geometric shapes, and paisley and parrot prints.

Orange hue happy?

Who could ever resist the happy vibe of orange andtangerine? Not only do these add a splash of cheer, but they also give everyensemble character and an edgier feel.

Pink is the color

While this is easily the fool-proof solution to everywoman’s wardrobe dilemma, a small but noticeable shift in its form and usechanged the look of smart dressing. We give this shade its well-deservedmanicured-nail-applause for its versatility as office appropriate separatessuch as blazer, skirt, and shorts. Talk about a totally new set of cute andfeminine outfits!

Pastel and Candy Shades

Sweet sorbet shades and candy hues give off a low-key,ladylike vibe to women’s wear as seen in Louis Vuitton’s Spring/SummerCollection of biker-and tweed jackets, dresses accessorized with detachablelace collars and oversized buttons, anglaise tops, and cellophane skirts.

MetallicBasics

Shine and luster took a luminous spin as metallicschanged the night scene with an over-all neo-disco feel.

Peplum

It’s the most feminine style that sashayed in the year2012. The short flared ruffle around the waist defines this season’s bestselling peplum skirts, dresses, and tops. This trend transcends from minimalistand romantic to sexy as it gives an illusion of a small waist.

GO GREEN

Top: Dorothy Perkins | Badana (used as scarf) and neckpiece: Parfois
While we’re united with the global call for environment conservation and adaptation of vegan living, no, we’re not talking here of tree planting or munching on mixed vegetables. Instead, we’re flashing the green light to welcome 2013 with Edge Davao’s own take on style and trends. Presenting, our first fashion editorial for the year.

Top and Pants: Dorothy Perkins | Beaded necklace: Forever 21 | Bangles, ring, and clutch: Parfois
Through the years, we’ve seen how the wide range of vivid and vibrant tones weave new designs into the fashion scene, sparking imaginations and motivating purchasing decisions. Every designer and retail giant relies heavily on forecast for inspiration for next season’s collection. This time around, PANTONE, the universal color authority and every design professional’s most reliable source of color information, picks Green as its top hue for the year 2013.
Top and shorts: Dorothy Perkins | Belt, clutch, and scarf (used as headband): Parfois |
Shades and necklace: Forever 21
The birth of green in fashion first sprung in the midst of the environmental awareness in the 90’s. The green branding is closely defined around the values of eco-living. Eventually, the prevalence of green rose in couture markets, and we began to see more hints of green translations in boutique racks and runway shows.

Long sleeved button down blouse and Pants: Dorothy Perkins | Inner top: Forever 21 |
Belt, necklace, bangle, and bag: Parfois
Asit takes a stronger presence in 2013, the most prevalent shade of green is predicted to be that of the verdant gemstone, emerald.
This luminous, magnificent hue is the color of sophistication, life, prosperity, and beauty. Such color serves its purpose in fashion as its classic elegance makes well for stunning women’s formal, daily wear, and accessories. While it screams of elegance and luxury, it is, first and foremost, a neutral color that promote harmony to every outfit. Whatever piece of green you wear will complement the other elements of your ensemble. However, while this shade enlivens all colors in the spectrum, it is best matched with tan, black, blue, yellow, and purple. Designers Michael Kors and Vivienne Tam were right on the money when they featured emerald green in their recent runway shows. Soon after that, Hollywood celebrities donned themselves in green for red carpet events.

Sashay in your best street armor by incorporating an element of emerald green into your getup. Styling in this color is perfect for everyone living in the metro as it calls to mind a sense of clarity and rejuvenates the soul amidst the fast paced city life and buzz. This shade is the most relaxing to the eye, and balance is something people pick up and listen to. In effect, it commands attention and ushers in appreciation from on lookers. This is also an all-weather appropriate tone which effortlessly gives you a fresher feel, come rain or come shine.

MOMMY IN BLOOM

Patty Basa-Tan has definitely bloomed into a beautiful and hands on mommy.
She was better known as the playmate to our kids. My Tatiana coveted her Tita Patty’s iTouch as she claimed it has more games for kids than mine. At 26, she still enjoys the company of kids and exudes an angelic and innocent feel even with her humor and antics.
The birth of Mischa Danelle “Dani” Basa Tan on September 12, 2012 made a mommy out of our baby-friend/colleague. In pictures and colorful narrations, Patty proudly displays motherly affection on her new bundle of joy with husband Michael Paul Palma Tan.

Baby Dani had her first coming out party last December 27, as the Basa and Tan family celebrated the blessing of the little one into the Christian world. The proud parents chose a couple of their closest friends and relatives to stand as godparents to their first child. Pat’s sister, cousins, and friends from college and high school make up the list of Ninangs, namely Christia Alice Basa, Lace Guy, Ina Abella Limpin, Aisha Gutierrez Hemandas, Allison Cadena, Anna Bahala, and Teresa Jalotjot. The chosen Ninongs are the tight-knit pack from Michael’s childhood as represented by Jonee Abella, Jeff Reyes, Noel Uy, Al David Uy, Jason Tan, Dodie Villafuerte, and Reggie Reyes. Patty’s only brother, Jose Basa, is also one of the Ninongs.

Watching her enjoy her role as mommy during her baby’s baptismal party, I couldn’t help but smile at the wonderful picture motherhood has made of Patty. The youthful glow and playful vibe remains as this wide eyed dreamy gal, who still fancies Disney fairytales, pranced and carried around her 3-month old “Dani” for snap shots with friends and family. The cherubic cheeks and “air-balloon” muscles of the little princess were far too cute, and Patty never goes amiss in happily telling tales of her baby’s heavy weight charms and appetite. The muscle-healing patch on Patty’s hand is proof alone of how inseparable mom and baby are.

To Patty, here’s wishing for many blessed years of good health and happiness for your family. And yes, welcome to the world of kiddie parties and do-it-yourself paper crafts. Cheers to you, pretty mommy! J
